the professional automobile repair trade. The cool thing is that
they also provide this information in a much more reasonable
($$) car by car format for the do-it-yourselfer. As of this writing
DIY data includes suggested labor times and OEM parts pricing
which, to those of you who are mechanically inclined, would
provide an excellent source for accurate repair times. Note that
the repair information itself is professional level and might be
beyond the scope of the casual hobbiest.

Used primarily to check title history on used cars (for a fee)
AutoCheck will inform you if a particular vehicle has been
salvaged, bought back under lemon laws, etc. Owned by Experian
. . . similar in features to CARFAX, a good tool if you are
purchasing a used car.

Online classified advertising for new and used cars. Includes
private sellers, private buyers, dealers, new cars, and used cars.
Includes pictures of what is for sale, fun information, and useful
links.

Used primarily to check title history on used cars (for a fee)

A highly rated car buying service . . . you can either buy 'direct'
from CarsDirect, or from one of their affiliate dealers. They will
even deliver the car to you. Also a good place to compare and
price brands, models, options, etc. on new cars.

A huge site filled with automotive reviews, advice, comparisons,
pictures, ratings, new prices, used values, etc. Well organized and
easy to use . . . one of the best information sources on the net.

An information site that specializes in rating new and used
vehicles in several categories. An excellent research tool if you
are purchasing a new car. Includes ratings on maintenance and
repair costs.

Used primarily as a source for invoice prices (available by year,
make, and model), and used car values (as a trade to a dealer, as
a sale or purchase to/from a private party, or as a purchase from
a dealer).

NADA stands for National Automobile Dealers Association. They
are the largest trade group representing automobile dealers in the
USA. They have an excellent consumer site which includes a very
complete pricing guide (it includes collectables, muscle cars,
specialty cars . . . as well as the more usual sedans, vans, trucks,
coupes, etc.).

For California residents only, BAR stands for Bureau of
Automotive Repair. In California all automobile repair shops need
to be licensed. On this site you can verify licenses and lodge
complaints. There is also good information on choosing a shop,
buying out of state cars, smog check requirements, etc.
